How To Get a Refurbished iPhone For Less #BuySmarter #ad

My son just turned 11 years old and has been asking for a cell phone ever since he was about eight. I always told him that he needed to be in the middle school before I would even consider it, but guess what – he’s in the 6th grade at the middle school this year. Honestly, I was dreading the expense because we all know cell phones can cost a pretty penny.

But what if I told you that there is a way to save on your child’s smart device? Have you thought about getting them a used iPhone?

New smartphones start at a steep cost, $649, and most carriers no longer subsidize the cost. Kids all too frequently break and lose smartphones and tablets, and a brand new device may not be a wise investment for a child. Nearly 70% of parents reported that a child in their household has broken or lost at least one smartphone, according to a Gazelle survey.

Purchasing a new phone or tablet. Purchasing a new phone is often expensive and time-consuming, but it doesn’t need to be! Why purchase a new iPhone or iPad when you can get a lower-cost version from Gazelle? You can save up to 40% on a Gazelle Certified pre-owned device.

  1. kristimaloney

Well, my sons both just got a new phone. They are really inexpensive pay-as-you-go. They are able to text on them too….That’s all they need at the moment. I would consider a used phone when the oldest is ready for an upgrade. Thanks for the head up on Gazelle!

  2. Liz Mays

It totally makes sense when it comes to kids. That’s so true.

  3. Pam

Refurb is definitely a good idea for kids. They’re so likely to break things.

  4. Mama to 5 BLessings

I agree! My kids do not have cell phones but my I could see getting my 10 year old a phone in a year or so.

  5. alexisakamom0616

I’ve heard great things about buying on there!

  6. asbestrecipes

Saving in phones is a must I just paid over a thousand dollars for a new phone wish I knew this before =)

  7. Lois Alter Mark

Isn’t it crazy how expensive new electronics are? Refurbished is looking better by the minute!

  8. Michele

I think ot would be a great idea since children, according to what you said–lose or break their electronics frequently!

  9. Dogvills

I agree! My daughter has lost a couple of phones already. I will check this out.

  10. Karen

Oh I wish we could band together and demand better prices. Apple and iPhone have created a commercialism monster. I always buy the next to most recent release for a little savings.

  11. miss (@thedealmatch)

I agree with this article. Buy refurbished and save money. I only get a new phone if i can get it for cheap or almost free with renewal.

  12. Elizabeth Towns

Refurbished is good, but it’s still too much for a child. I am looking for a replacement for my iPhone, though and this sounds like a good option for me!

  13. Jennifer Clay

My daughter has been asking for a phone… Maybe in a couple of years I will get her one but I am loving this site and being able to save money. Phones can be expensive!

  14. Heather D. (@GirlGoneMom)

I would consider a refurb for my kids. They are not responsible enough to get new!

  15. Alissa Apel

That is great! I never knew they sold them this way! When Mica gets a phone I’ll have to look into this.

  16. Theresa

Sounds like something I need. Over the past 3 months I have managed to water log my iPhone, then put 2 nice scratches on the glass. Jason’s ready to kill me lol. I think he’ll insist I get a refurbished phone if I do any more damage to mine.

  17. Crystal

Oh gosh! You need bubble wrap too. I have had pretty good luck, despite being clumsy.

  18. Debra

A kid hasn’t broken any smart phones, but I think she is up to three itouches she has broken! Man, it gets expensive!

  19. Elizabeth O.

Refurbished phones aren’t as bad as people think. It’s pretty much the same. Lower or higher model, it doesn’t matter. Thanks for the tips.

  20. patricemfoster

  21. bismah2010

There is absolutely nothing wrong with refurbished phones. It is actually a really good choice for not only children but also for anyone tight on a budget or just learning how to use a phone.

  22. Crystal

I wouldn’t have a problem at all with a refurbished device. Throughout the years my husband and I have swapped phones which broke us into the idea. Love the deals!

  23. justalittlespoonful

Wow, this seems like a really great way of shopping for a smart phone or other mobile device. I agree with you that technology these days isn’t really as dated as people claim. I had the same iPhone for 4 years and only replaced it after I shut it in my car trunk.

  24. Crystal

My husband inherited an old iPhone and it’s still great. No reason to get the latest and greatest every single time.

  25. Ourfamilyworld

Gazelle sounds like an awesome site. I have heard about refurbished phones, but I don’t know where to get them.

  26. MJ. L

I have seen commercials about this site, when I am ready to get my daughter a cell phone I will definitely check it out!

  31. Brittany

My daughter is already asking for a phone and she’s not even 7! You can definitely save money buying refurbished!

  32. littlemisscant

We have saved both of our old iphones and depending on technology we will try and let the kids use them but everything changes so fast! I will not spend full price on phones when we can’t even get the kids to keep their shoes nice….

  33. Mykidsguide

I think refurbished phones are okay. They are as good as new and definitely cheaper.

  34. Parenting Healthy

This is so great. They are a lot of money new!

  40. Chelley @ A is For Adelaide

This is great info! My hubby and I always buy refurbished from NewEgg, but I don’t think he even knows about Gazelle!

  41. tara pittman

My teen wants to but a new phone. I will have him check this place out

  42. Dawn

Gazelle sounds awesome! I’d much rather buy refurbished and save a little money than pay extra for the opportunity to open a box.

  43. Kelly Hutchinson

I had no idea that you could get a refurbished smartphone or such a great price. I need to look into this.

  44. Aubrey

I’ve go to check this out. My daughter wants a device, but she breaks hers. Don’t want to spend a lot on something for her.

  45. upliftingfam

I think buying an older phone to add to your plan is a perfect idea for kids. There is no reason why they should have a $600 or 700 dollar phone.

  46. Stacie @ Divine Lifestyle

This is the best idea ever! I will definitely be going the Gazelle route the next time I upgrade or get another device.

  47. Ann Bacciaglia

I have had a few refurbished phones. They worked great. It is a great way for kids to get a great quality phone without the cost.

  48. Elizabeth Lampman

This is a fantastic idea. I have never thought to buy a refurbished phone. My Daughter needs a new phone. I am going to look into this.

  49. Tee

My daughter (only 7) has been asking for a cell phone. She knows she’s not getting one anytime soon. But getting a second hand one (at much cheaper price) wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.

  50. Paula Schuck

Cell phones can be so expensive. This would be a fantastic way to save some money on a phone. I will have to share this with my friends.

  51. [email protected]

I have been thinking about using Gazelle to get a tablet. Great deals and great bargains.

  52. Wendy @ ABCs and Garden Peas

I’ve heard about Gazelle before but never used it. I think it’s a great idea to buy used as long as it’s certified.

  53. sicorra

I agree, brand new is very expensive. I had never heard of Gazelle, but it sounds very smart.

  54. Erlene

We’re thinking of getting my youngest son a phone. Never thought to look at Gazelle…will have to check it out.

  55. Ora Lee Gurr

A used iPhone, Smartphone, or tablet that has a warranty and costs way less is always a good idea in my book. To be fair to the kids, I have to confess it was me who lost a fancy phone. I broke down and got a flip phone while getting a new smartphone for the oldest kid, who regards it as her most important possession. I’ll check into Gazelle because the youngest’s phone just got wiped out.

  56. Felicia

Phones can be so expensive. This is a great way to save especially if you have kids.

  57. erikaawakening962161059

This is a fantastic idea. Who wants to pay full price when such a great “recycling” option is available?

  58. miss (@thedealmatch)

I think it’s a great idea to buy refurbished. Many refurbished items offer extended warranty. Save money

  59. bloodcravephotography

  63. lauriefloyd

I don’t think any child should have a brand new iphone! This is perfect for kids! Thanks for the heads up on the Gazelle!!

  64. Crissy Page

I’m all for going used for the kids. Especially while they are young and prone to breaking everything!

  65. Emily

I tend to forget about being able to buy refurbished. I bought a refurbished camera once and it was less than 1/2 the pric eof new and lasted me 3+ years, it’s a great way to save money.

  66. Mama to 5 BLessings

I love my Android but honestly I have been missing my iPhone. I need to check this out, definitely more affordable!

  67. Jennifer H

I agree, kids don’t need something brand new. They need to learn how to be responsible and care for their items before getting new technology. This sounds like a great option.

  68. cathicrismon

Wow! I might have to consider Gazelle. I dropped my phone a few months back and for the first time ever I have a cracked/shattered screen. The screen protector is holding it all together and it workd fine so I haven’t bought a new one but now……

  69. Tammi Roy

This is a great way to shop for a phone. Thanks for the extra $10 off. I will have to go over to the website to check it out.

  70. Claudette Esterine

Thanks for the information. Will keep it in mind should I need a new/used phone.

  71. becca112971

what a great way to shop for a phone. I’ve been hearing good things about this company.

I didn’t even think of this idea when I signed up for my new phone and very long contract. Great info for anyone and I’ll be looking at that site when I need to change phones.

  73. Seattle Travel Blogger

I think it is an awesome idea to go with a used phone for a kid. Not as much concern about having to replace it if (or I should say when) it breaks!

  74. Amber NElson

They charge so much for phones these days. This would be good to check out!

  75. leechrista

Interesting options. I would consider this for my kids since they ruin ALL THE THINGS! Thanks!

  76. thriftychicmom

That is great to know since my kids will soon need phones. I love that they are certified.

  77. socialite123l

I’ve heard about Gazelle and the website has popular electronics in good condition. I think getting a Refurbished as opposed to a new one for your Son was a great choice.

  78. Ricci

I am all about saving money and I think these refurbished phones are where it’s at!! Great post!!

  79. Julia

My husband and I are still deciding how old our kids need to be before they are allowed cell phones. but thanks for the heads up on the deals available.

  80. kitchnwhisperer

Perfect timing as I am in the process of getting a new cell phone right now. Will have to check this out.

  81. Laura O'Neill (@LauraOinAK)

What a great service to save some money. I had the same cell phone for 8 years, so I know that you can make due without the latest and greatest.

  82. Shann Eva

This is a great idea. I might even consider one for myself.

  83. Sabrina @ Dinner, then Dessert

My husband’s gotten many of his electronics as refurbished! They’re often just as good as the new ones but much cheaper!

  84. Carol Bryant

You know with how fast technology moves, a refurbished one does not sound like a bad idea.

  85. Annemarie LeBlanc

I would probably consider getting a refurbished phone for a first time user, specially if it is a child. When the time comes that they learn to be responsible for the gadget and their usage, I would then get them a brand new phone that they like.

  86. dawn

rebur sounds great. especially for children. I have actually used reburs before and they work just as good and lasted a really long time.

  87. RonRon

Great tips. This can surely save a lot of money.

  88. Rosey

I never thought I’d get my youngest a phone, but circumstances right now dictate that I might. We’ll see… If so, I’ll remember the $10 off here!

  89. moesly15

This is a great alternative to a pricey phone for a child. Good resource.

  90. Miss Millennia Mag (@MissMillMag)

Agreed with your post!! It sounds perfect for kids!!

  91. Chubskulit Rose

A friend of mine used Gazelle website in buying her kids phone too! That’s awesome.

  92. Tatanisha Pitts-Worthey

Yes kids can lose or break their phones, which can cost hundreds of dollars to replace. Giving them used phone is not a bad idea after all.

  93. yumeating

Kiddo is going to be 11 in January. She had an iPod which would be great as we all have Apple and she can face time those she needs to speak with most. But, she lost it. So, no cell phone for her until she can prove she’s a bit more responsible. She is always with someone who has a phone anyway, so she can just use ours. We also have a 10 minute talk rule in place right now to help her better manage her time and attention.

  94. upliftingfam

I think this is a wonderful idea. I agree my kids don’t need the latest and greatest device especially a smart phone. I would be afraid that my child would lose it or it would get stolen.

  95. Dhemz

How awesome! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been thinking of getting a phone for my school girl. I would definitely would like to check it out.

  96. Nickida

Gazelle sounds like a great option for buying a used cell phone

  97. Jasmine Espinal

Wish I would have known about this sooner. I just spent a ton of money on my sons new iPhone

  98. Cara (@StylishGeek)

I have had a bad experience with refurbished iPhones. We got one for me and one for my kid. Both of the completely broke after a few months of use. I like the plans of the phone companies now where you can lease them. That is more appealing to me.

  99. Jeanine

I think this is awesome. What a great idea wish I would have done this when I got my oldest his phone. He started with a iPhone 4 and now has my old 5S. Nothing wrong with refurbs at all!

  100. thewomentalk

What a great deal! This is so awesome. Now I know where to look when my little one starts asking for his own iphone!

iPhones are so expensive, so anytime you can find one discounted – go for it!! I absolutely love my iPhone!

  105. Shanéy Maharaj

I might need this! I’m still using an iPhone 4 … Hubby laughs at me! Love the brand just can’t afford the latest one.

  106. Tom

Our kids won’t be getting a phone anytime soon. But when they do, I will definitely be looking at a used phone now!!!

  107. patranila

I don’t have any Apple mobile devices except for an iPod from 1907 but that iPad Mini price is very enticing!

  108. Dina

my dh is looking to get an iphone 6. I’ll share this post with him so we can get a deal.

  111. Valery Brennan (@ValeryBrennan)

I don’t have kids yet but buying a refurbished phone for them is SO smart! We all know most kids will end up breaking them anyway (heck, most adults do haha) so spending less is definitely the way to go.

  112. Christina Aliperti

I agree, there is no need for the newest phone for a kid. A used phone can do all the things a new one can do, so what’s the difference.

  113. hopscotch

My son would ask me an new phone. i think it was perfect for him gonna check this out.

  114. Manu Kalia

Wow. For an iPhone that $469 is good for a refurbished one. I’ve never tried on getting a refurbished but I think it is worth your money.

  115. Stephane Miller

Truly good advice. My son has had his phone for about a month and has already cracked the screen. The next one will be “on him” so this is great info! Thanks

  116. sacha

I believe that a used phone for a child is good, at that age they misplace things alot. If they can keep it in good shape then get an upgrade

  117. HilLesha

I love this concept, because phones are so expensive. Even a refurbished phone for an adult is a good idea!

  118. gratefulheartyoga

These are great tips for adults let alone for kids! I think it would be so hard to keep up with paying for technology as a parent!

  119. tracey

This is so great! I didn’t know you could get refurbished iphones!

  120. Ashley

I would totally buy used if I needed a new phone. Smartphones last a long time these days!

  121. Melissa

My daughter won’t be needing a phone for a few more years but I will have to keep these ideas in mind for when she does.

  122. Making Our Life Matter

I don’t even have an I-Phone for myself, let alone for the kids. This is a great idea when the time comes for my kids to buy their own.

  123. Fariha N.

The more I think about it, the more buying a refurbished phone makes sense. Especially when it comes to saving money on the latest technology for our kids.

  124. maria s.

I completely agree. I was a little hesitant to buy refurbished phones but it really does make sense. I love the idea of saving some extra money also.

  125. Shelley Zurek

I think now that the phone industry is no longer subsidizing phones, that they used phone market will be a lot healthier. I love the idea of Gazelle.

  126. Kiwi

I think buying refurbished electronics is the way to go for kids. These kids want adult phones and they are super expensive…so why not get the same thing for cheaper?! Its a good idea and I would do it if I had kids.

  127. D. Durand Worthey

Yes, there is much life and a whole lot of money saving when going the refurbished route. Great write up and good rock solid and practical advice. Thank you!

  128. Peachy @ The Peach Kitchen

Getting your child a used iPhone is practical. I am thinking of the same thing for my daughter.
