If you’re a regular around here, you already know that I train in Krav Maga. I’ve spent this summer training extra hard and going through the black belt testing process, which takes a total of three months. At my dojo, they do black belt testing twice a year – once in the summer and once in the winter. I started the process back in June when I made it through the qualification round. Once someone has passed the qualification test, they can move on to the three phases of testing.
There are three adults going through testing this cycle and we all passed our phase one test back on August 1st. This past Saturday we had our phase two (of three) black belt test and I’m happy to say that all three of us passed! Yay!
It was a tough day. Really tough. The three of us did drill after drill after drill as well as running our timed mile, doing 100 push ups, 100 sit ups and three 2 minute sparring rounds each.
As you might have guessed, I’ve had to train pretty hard this past summer to get ready for the testing process. Until I went through phase one testing, I really had no idea just how much my body was going to go through. As soon as phase one was under my belt and I had a better idea of what to expect during my next two tests, I kicked my training into high gear. With the kids home, I didn’t have much free time to make it to the gym to work on strength training, etc. Sure, I went to Krav class 3 or 4 times a week, but because each phase of testing is approximately four hours (yes, four hours) long, I really wanted to figure out a way to build up my stamina.
So I had to get a little creative. I put on my thinking cap and started coming up with ways that I could sneak in workouts at home – for free.
If you’re not huge on running and want to avoid the gym, then walk. One of the best parts of walking is that you can bring the kids along with you. You can walk short distances or long distances and there’s no limit to how long you can walk. You may need to do some adjusting when the weather gets colder, but walking in the cold isn’t so bad either.
Have you discovered the land that is YouTube? There are so many different videos to help you work out for free. There are all different types of workout videos available on YouTube as well, everything from yoga, to walking, to Chalene Johnson. For those of you who are pregnant, even you can get an awesome workout through YouTube because of the endless amount of tutorials available.
Start an At-Home Gym
The only thing that may cost money about an at-home gym is finding equipment that you can use. Honestly, you don’t need anything fancy to work out at home. A few weights, jump rope, and a mat and there are tons of things you can do to get “fit” right at home.
I also get in some extra training at the dojo when I can!
Chase Your Kids
Okay, you may laugh at this one, but your kids are the perfect way to get into shape for free. Have you ever seen your kids move around? They know how to stay in shape and all you need to do is follow their lead. Playing ball, running around, soccer, baseball, or just playing outside in the grass with them can help you get into shape quickly!
Being healthy is not just about working out, though. You have to eat right in addition to exercising. A few simple changes can really make all the difference. Living better is easy when you eat fresh foods with natural ingredients and have some healthy beverage options to choose from.
Walmart makes it pretty easy to locate those healthy beverages – they’re easy to find right in the juice aisle. I grabbed some Snapple Diet Peach preferred, along with some Vita Coco Pure and Neuro Sonic – Energy Refreshed.
One of the black belts who went through the testing process during the last cycle told me that coconut water helped her get through the grueling tests. Actually now that I think of it, grueling isn’t even a strong enough of a word to describe what the three of us went though that day. I brought some with me to my test last Saturday and I definitely think it helped keep me hydrated and energized.
Phase three is September 26th and I will be training extra hard over the next three weeks to get ready for it. Bring it on!
