Lately in the Year of Robin and Chris #rueyear2016

By now you know that my hubby, Chris, and I have declared 2016 as the year of Robin and Chris. We decided that we were going to make this year all about trying new things and going on as many adventures as possible. The two of us had a lot of fun during the month of March & beginning of April and today I’m going to share some of the highlights.

Chris’s birthday was in January and I got him tickets to see Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage live in Boston. It was an orchestra that played music from the show while some scenes from Star Trek films and TV footage was simultaneously beamed in high definition to a 40-foot wide screen.

Look closely at Chris’s ear….

rue star trek

Anyhow, I have to say that despite the fact that I felt very out of place at the show because I have never seen an episode of the show or any of the movies, Chris loved it. The place was filled with super fans and to be honest, as I walked out of the show once it was over, I felt like I had taken up a ticket that really should have gone to someone who was a fan of the show. There were tons of references and jokes that I just didn’t get, but like I said – Chris had fun and that’s what counts. Especially since it was one of his birthday presents.

The following weekend we went to the JFK Library in Boston. Each of us had gone on a field trip there at some point in elementary school and hadn’t been back since, so we figured we would check it out. We both thought that since we’re adults, we would most likely appreciate it much more than we did as 5th graders.

We did.

rue jfk lib

The Library & museum is a tribute to the life and times of John F. Kennedy and was filled with tons of memorabilia from events throughout his life, including his time as our 35th president.

rue jfkk

It was pretty cool and I think we both feel like we got it out of our system (meaning there is no need to go back again – ever). Once we left the JFK library, we drove over to Castle Island since we were nearby. Our intention was to grab lunch at Sully’s and eat on the grass by the fort, but the line was at least 200 people deep, so we ended up going to Wahlburgers instead. NOM.

rue castle island

The following Friday, we had tickets to a show in Cambridge (I will tell you about that in a sec). Since we normally park at the Coast Guard station in Boston, which is right next to the North End, we decided to grab dinner there and then Uber over to the show.

In case you don’t know this, the North End is the Italian section of Boston and it’s filled with amazing bakeries and Italian restaurants. I totally forget the name of the place we ate at, but it was along Hanover Street and honestly, I have never had a bad meal in the North End – and this place was no exception.

rue north end

The show that we had tickets for was called T: An MBTA Musical. It was at ImprovBoston, which is actually in Cambridge. Cambridge is a whole separate city which abuts Boston. There is no parking in Cambridge hence the ubering. For those not around here, the MBTA stands for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority and it’s better known around here as the T. It’s the public transportation system (subway and buses) in the city of Boston and they are notorious for their lousy service.

rue mbta

Even though ImprovBoston is known for their comedy improvisational shows, they do scripted comedy shows like the one we saw every once in a while. I’m not going to lie, the show stunk. They hit on all of the major complaints that people have with the T (delays, the T cops who think they are real cops and frequent breakdowns), but the show went in a really silly treasure hunt direction and it just didn’t work. It’s playing until next month and if you are from the area and were thinking about seeing it, I would recommend saving your money.

But moving on….

I am almost embarrassed to say this, but neither one of us had ever tried Indian food before, so when my sister and BIL invited us to go with them to Bukhara in Jamaica Plain, we were excited to try it.

The food was ah-mazing. My Brother in law helped us decide what to get since Indian food is his favorite comfort food and he is very knowledgeable about the different menu options. He definitely helped us choose wisely – the food was so good.

rue indian food

Chris ordered something that my BIL wasn’t familiar with and ended up with this:

rue indian food 2

I don’t remember what it was called, but it was filled with Chicken and potatoes and since it was as long as his arm, he had plenty to share so we all tried it. It was so yum!

Then about two weeks ago, Chris sends me this on Facebook:

You guys know I am all over ghost tours and things like that, so there was no question that we were going on this tour. I mean, a haunted house right in my little old town – I never would have passed up a chance to go to this.

The weekend before last, we went on the tour. We drove over there earlier in the day so I could get a picture of the house because I knew my phone pics wouldn’t come out that good once it was dark.

rue oliver house

The tour was kind of lame, but since this is the first time they’re doing anything like this in the house, I wasn’t expecting much. It was run by some local paranormal hunting group, but the girls who were running the whole thing never really even introduced themselves and they never once gave the name of their group.

In the two hours we were there we got a tour of the house, heard about the history of the home, were told about some of the sightings/paranormal experiences that were reported in the house, did an EVP session as a group (there were about 12 of us including the 2 girls running the tour) and given a little free time to explore the house on our own.

Chris and I didn’t see much, but I did get this picture that I posted over on Snapchat that night:

rue orb

I would definitely go back, but not until the group had their tour a little more organized and it was run a little better.

Last weekend, Chris and I went on the Hahvahd Tour of Harvard University. I wrote a whole separate post on that, so I won’t get into too many details other than the fact that it was pouring that day and it made the tour a whole lot less fun than I think it would have been had it not been raining.

rue harvard tour

Oh well, such is life.

Last Thursday we went to a wine/beer/local food tasting event in our town and while we were literally the youngest two people there – we ate and drank a ton, so we forgot all about the other people there in no time.

rue wine

We’ve been having a blast and are looking ahead to doing some fun things in May. We have a family vacation coming up, so I think that’s all we’ve got for April. We have a few things planned for May including a fun hike with my sister & BIL out by their new house and we’re participating in a Passenger Rail Evacuation Drill – plus we have a few other fun things in the works. Oh and let’s not forget that the beach opens in May, so we’re hoping to get in some beach time over Memorial Day weekend. Be sure to follow the #rueyear2016 hashtag on Instagram and Twitter, We’re always up to something!
