This is a photo of the people who I lived with for the first 23 years of my life.
They are my family. In the photo, I am pictured with my bother, sister and my parents. The picture was taken the day that my sister got married and it’s the most recent photo of the five of us together.
Here we all are with the rest of our loved ones. My brother, Brian, is pictured with his fiance, Angelina. My sister is with her new husband, Phil and I am with Chris & the boys. This is the only picture existence of all of us together, so I treasure it. I have a printed copy of it framed in my living room and I love how happy we all look in this photo.
The thing is, my mom is not well. She hasn’t been in a really, really long time (many years). She’s a melanoma survivor (going on 4 years), she has a liver that practically doesn’t work anymore (she’s on the transplant list), she’s a diabetic and on top of all that, she literally has no immune system. And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg.
Because of all her ailments, she is constantly getting wounds that just don’t heal. The majority of them are on her legs. She has terrible varicose veins which make her skin susceptible to skin irritations. Minor skin irritations turn into big ones and because these wounds take months and months to show even the slightest amount of improvement, she is in and out of the hospital with constant infections. Not to mention, she is in pain all of the time.
In the past, whenever she left the house, she had to make sure she had a cane with her to help her walk. The pain of taking steps with the open wounds hurt her too much to walk without one.
But over the past few years, she’s upgraded to a more effective form of getting around:
It seems as the years go by, the more frequent she’s getting these wounds on her legs and each time, they seem to get worse.
My mom’s most recent hospital stay was this past January. One of the wounds on her leg had gotten so badly infected that she was delirious and my poor dad ended up having to call an ambulance to take her to the hospital.
Since she’s been sick for many years, I always like to make sure that Mother’s Day is extra special for her. Since she was so sick earlier this year, I want this Mother’s Day to be the best ever. I was out shopping with my husband last week and noticed this amazing One-Stop Shop by American Greetings at Walmart. They had everything I could ever need or want to create a truly special gift for my mom this Mother’s Day.
This display was filled with all sorts of great gifts for mom. My mom is one of those people that has everything – and if she doesn’t, she goes out and buys it for herself. That makes gift giving challenging sometimes, but when I saw all the great things in the One Shop Stop display, I decided to pick up a few things that I knew my mom would like. And guess what? I got everything for under $25! I got a cute magnetic memo board, a set of 3 memo pads and a cute journal with an anchor on it. She loves all things nautical, so I knew she’d love it as soon as I laid eyes on it. I can’t wait to give it to her!
