The Year of Robin and Chris – February Highlights #rueyear2016

By now you know that my hubby, Chris, and I have declared 2016 as the year of Robin and Chris. We decided that we were going to make this year all about trying new things and going on as many adventures as possible. The two of us had a lot of fun during the month of February and today I am going to tell you some of the highlights of the past month.

We started off February by going to a chili cook-off. It was held as part of the Newport Winter Festival and we both ended up eating our weight in chili. Seriously. There were 10 competitors and not only did we try all ten, but we went back to at least three booths for seconds – and one booth was so good that we went back for thirds.

We basically rolled ourselves out of the Newport Hyatt (where the event was held) and went into food comas as soon as we got back home. It was awesome.

I had gotten Chris tickets to see comedian Jim Norton for his birthday in January and we went into Boston to see the show about two weeks ago.

The show itself was hilarious, but we (and especially me) ended up getting a two for one deal. The theater (The Wilbur in Boston) is set up more like a comedy club than a traditional theater. It has seats at tables right up front and bar stools (with backs) lined up in small sections set up behind the tables.

The lady who was seated next to me was completely sh*tfaced. I mean like frat party drunk. She was so far gone that I don’t even think she knew where she was. Here are a few of ways she kept us entertained for the night:

1. The show started at 7:30 pm with an opening act that lasted for approximately 20-25 minutes. By 7:36, the lady had already fallen off of her stool….on to my lap. If I hadn’t of been there to break her fall, she would have fallen hard onto the ground.

2. At the theater, there are waitresses that will bring you over-priced beer when they walk around. This lady ordered no less than seven beers and either spilled or kicked over all seven of them.

3. She left to use the bathroom (I assume) during the show and couldn’t find her seat when she came back. She wandered up and down the aisle for a good 3-4 minutes before she finally heard her friend whispering loudly for her.

4. At one point during the show, she pulled out her cell phone. But it wasn’t just any cell phone. It was a vintage Nokia. You know, like the ones we had before smartphones were invented. Like this one:

nokia phone

Anyhow, she pulls out her prehistoric phone about half way through the show and starts playing with it. After a few minutes, she puts the phone up to her ear and slurs (emphasis on the slurring part) “Hello. Ok. Can I call you back?” very loudly and then “hangs up” her phone & puts it away in her bag.

The thing is, THERE WAS NO ONE THERE. I was sitting right next to her and could see the whole thing – there was no one even on the phone. She was just pretending to get a call for whatever reason. Her friend that she was there with shushed her, but that didn’t stop her from answering the phantom calls two more times during the show.

She was loud. Everyone in the section turned to look at her, but she was so far gone that she didn’t even notice. It was frustrating and comical all at the same time. I was patiently waiting for her to do it a forth time because I was seriously going to rip the phone out of her hand and chuck it into the aisle, but sadly she only did it the three times.

And if you doubt for a second that I actually would have ripped the phone out of her hand and thrown it (and most likely gotten myself kicked out of the show as well), you don’t know me at all – because I would have done it without any hesitation.

Despite the major sideshow going on next to us, we had a really good time and it’s something we’re going to remember for a really long time.

The following weekend we headed down the cape, or as people who aren’t from around here call it, Cape Cod. I wanted to visit some of the little shops down there to pick up something “New Englandy” for my cousins in DC who are graciously hosting myself, Chris and the kids for a week in April.

We decided to head to Falmouth because the beach is pretty there & there are a lot of great little shops on Maine Street.

rueyear cape

While we were walking down Main Street, we were harassed by a flock of about 10 turkeys who thought they owned the sidewalk….ok, they did own it because I got the heck out of their way when I saw them coming.

I found a great ceramic serving platter with small sand dollars around the edge for my cousin. She’s going to love it.

Before we left the area, we drove by Nobska Light (also in Falmouth) and had lunch at Captain Kidd in Woods Hole (NOM)!

This past weekend we hit the comic book store. There are a few gaps in my X-Men knowledge and I wanted to fill them in. I found what I was looking for & picked up a few comics to put in the kids Easter baskets!

It was a fairly quiet month, but that ok. We have a few really fun things planned for March, so stay tuned for more updates and be sure to follow the #rueyear2016 hashtag on Instagram and Twitter, We’re always up to something!

  1. Swa-Rai (@swaraimedia)

Love this! You have to make an effort to do things that will make you happy. Have fun!

  2. Ellie

Oh, I know you! I would have laughed my ass off to see you toss that phone! Once while in traffic there was this car that didn’t move through 2 changes of the light. The guy behind me got out of his car and walked up to that car. After talking to the driver, he must have realized that she was just on the phone and unaware of the light change. He reached in the car and threw her phone over the jersey barrier and into oncoming traffic on RT 1! Good bye phone! I laughed !

  3. alissa4illustration

OMG that drunk lady sounds annoying and comical for sure. I once had to tell someone to be quiet at a school function. He’s Mica’s friend’s Dad. He would not shut up. I finally turned around and said, “Cory shhhh! You’re as bad as the kids.” I said it in a sarcastic way, so he wouldn’t know if I was serious, or joking. That way I didn’t make an enemy, but got my point across. Drunks sure can be annoying! It’s great you are having a whole lot of fun!

  4. Adriana

It sounds like you had a crazy and awesome month!! I LOVE Cape Cod too, it’s such a nice little getaway spot that’s easy to get to! I’m in NY, so it’s a nice little road trip : ) happy (almost) March!!

  5. Pam Wattenbarger

I have never been to Cape Cod but it sounds like an awesome place to visit. I definitely want to go one day.

  6. parentingpatch

That chili cookoff sounds super fun. I would have loved to see those turkeys strutting their stuff!

  7. Nicole Lutzy

Some people have no respect for themselves! I did not know that vintage phones like this still worked! LOL

  8. Eileen Mendoza Loya

I think cellphone usage should be limited to certain places. If you’re in the theater or watching a show, there should be a rule that restricts cellphone use. Not for anything else, but just plain respect to those people who paid for tickets to watch and enjoy the show without annoying distractions.

  9. Gloria @ Homemade & Yummy

Well it certainly sounds like you are having a fun time. People at shows can be so annoying. I don’t even remember the last time I was in a comic book store.

  10. Bri

Making sure to have fun moments each month is a great way to live life. I have started doing this on a smaller scale and it has been really rewarding.

  11. Theresa

Sometimes the audience is more funny than the headliner. I would have been very amused with the drunk lady, but you were too nice not putting a face with a description. Next time, post her up lol.

  12. Travel Blogger

It was definitely more exciting than my month of Feb too! Hopefully, March will be even better

  13. Lyndsay CabildoLyndsay

We love comedy shows too! Nothing beats a great date when all you do is laugh, totally fun!

  14. Claudia krusch

We love it too! My husband and I often go on date nights!

  15. Terra Heck

Sounds like that lady tried to steal the show! Love that you and Chris take the time to spend fun, quality togetherness.

  16. Amanda Love

Sounds like the two of you are really making this your year and while February sounded great, I can’t wait to hear about March.

  17. Shelly @ Behind Blue Eyes

I love that you two are making it a year for YOU (both of you!). I have always wanted to visit Cape Cod. It looks absolutely beautiful. I am always drawn to cities near the water. There is just something about them.

  18. Nicole Lutzy

My husband is a comic book junkie. He would have loved visiting that comic book store!

  19. Athena

Looks like a great month and those are all things we would have also enjoyed. Although the cell phone thing would have driven me batty and I may not have ripped it out of her hand but I may have loudly said “REALLY?! SERIOUSLY?!” But yes it would have been comical at the same time.

  20. Nicole Herose Cochingco Escat

Making a fun and silly with each other would be memorable. I’m so glad that you had fun last month.

  21. patricemfosterp

Looks like you and your husband had a wonderful time. I use to collect comic books so i understand his passion, lol…Love your graphic.

  22. MJ. L

Wow looks like y’all had a great time! Love the pictures!

  23. Travel Blogger

Sound likes you had a good February. That is a terrible experience to have someone ruin a show for you. It is ridiculous that adults get that out of control in a public space.

  24. monicastable

It is wonderful that you are committed to having fun together! We do that and it makes all the difference. The beach is beautiful! Such fun to see the turkeys, who would have thought. You have such great memories!!!

  25. Stacie @ Divine Lifestyle

OMG, that’s an awesome story. While I’m sorry that the woman put a mar on your evening, she DID make for an excellent read.

  26. Claudia krusch

It sounds like you had an awesome month!! I LOVE Cape Cod too, we have relatives there! it’s such a nice little getaway, I need to get there this year!

I have to give a tip of the cap to a lady who appreciates a trip to the comic book store. Hate to admit it but I was ambushed and chased back to my car a few weeks ago by a wild turkey who was lurking by a parking lot.

  28. milenabarrett

I love that you guys are doing this! I want a hashtag, but can’t think of a good one! LOL!

  29. Emily, Our house now a home

Love the drunk woman with the old phone who got lost, really enjoyed hearing about your adventures!

  30. Rebecca

What a wonderful February you had. I am enjoying your adventures and may have to still this idea from you soon. Okay borrow is more PC.

  31. Tonya

I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone would ever want to be that drunk. What a night. Glad you were to enjoy the show despite her. I’ve wanted to visit the cape forever and your post just makes me want to visit even more.

  32. Heather

I thought you were going to say she was part of the show. So funny!

  33. tara pittman

That drunk lady would have annoyed me. I would have spoke to an employee about her.

  34. Cathy Herard

This is so wonderful. What a great way to put a focus on your relationship as a couple while also having a lot of fun.

  35. Ana De Jesus

I think this might be my favourite post of yours, it certainly put a smile on my face as I imagined her with a prehistoric Nokia and pretending to take phone calls. You were so patient I would have spoken to her about it. Maybe she thought she was part of the comedy act who knows?

  36. Liz Mays

Wow, you had some awesome adventures last month! I would have been so surprised by those sidewalk-strolling turkeys.

  37. Neely (@Neelykins)

I love this idea. Maye I can talk Andrew into something similar! I cant wait to read more about it

  38. Jenny

I have never been to a comedy show that would be a ton of fun to go to. I love that you are sharing your guys adventures, the cape looks beautiful!

  39. Liz Mays

A comedy show would be a blast. I wonder if that lady was trying to heckle!

  40. Lady Lilith

You sound like you had an amazing month. Thanks for sharing all of your amazing adventures.

  41. Pam Wattenbarger

You guys have had so much fun stuff going on this year and we’re only two months into it! I can’t wait to read about the rest of your adventures.

  42. Ashley

This is awesome! First of all, I have never been to a chili cook off and it sounds amazing. Secondly, my husband and I really need to take a page out of your book. It feels like we are always just trying to squeeze our dates in etc with our two young girls. This has definitely encouraged me to find some fun things for us to do in the next few months.

  43. Kelly Page (@TastingPage)

I love the new fun adventures you’re having. If you can have fun during an annoying drunk person’s disruption of a comedy show, you can have fun anywhere!

  44. Chubskulit Rose

What you guys are doing is so inspiring. I think that it is very important to find time for just the two of you.

  45. cvnxena

ah the joy of drunk people! it’s great that you are making the effort to go on an adventure and spend time together!

  46. littlemisscant

Wow… I think I HAD that phone way back in the day. I know my hubby had one. He hated it so much he ran over it with his truck. **snicker**

  47. wemake7

You both always have so much fun. =) I’m glad that you had a good time even though that lady wouldn’t shut up on the phone lol.

  48. Amer

Wow! You guys know how to party and have a good time.

  49. just1mommysopinion

I love that you and the hubby are making an effort to do new, fun things together! Drunk lady sounds pretty

  50. Debbie Denny

Does sound like an interesting month. I probably would have tossed that gals phone also!

  51. Miles Basilio

What an experience! That lady can be so annoying. But I’m glad you still managed to have a great time.

  52. Marcie W.

I love the theme of your year and it looks as if your February was fabulous. Visiting the New England area is totally on my bucket list.

  53. Toni | BoulderLocavore

Wait, turkeys? Walking down the street? Ok the lady at the show? Someone needed to cut her off and call her a cab. That is crazy.

  54. Elizabeth O.

What a fun and amazing February well spent with the husband! It’s so nice to go on trips like this and just enjoy each other’s company. Keep that fire burning! I can’t wait for the adventures you’re going to have this month!

  55. Tanya @ Mom's Small Victories

I love that you’ve declared this the year for you and your hubby. My Superhubby and I get so caught up in kids schedules but we make more of an effort to do things together and snag a date any chance we get. I love me some chili, I’m going to have to drag my boys to the next one I see. And my boys would love finding comics in their Easter baskets. We head to Free Comic Book Day every year and that’s the last time I was in the comic store with them.

  56. Maggie Branch

I am so excited for you! This is an amazing thing to do with your husband and I hope you have amazing experiences together.

  57. Christa

It sounded like you two had a great date but also very eventful! I would have gone crazy seeing those turkeys, I do not like birds!!

  58. Kristi

Fun adventures… can’t wait to read about your March fun. Turkey’s and odd cell phone fake talks, not sure if you can beat those lol

  63. Katya Bychkova

  64. Debra

Oh my word. I am laughing so hard about the lady at the show. What a funny memory!

  65. Amber NElson

It sure looks like you guys had a great time. I love the photos!

  66. LauraFunk

That shitfaced girl would have me ripping a phone outta her hand too! Looks like it was an eventful time

  67. Eileen Mendoza Loya

I could have told that lady off. I guess she left her manners with her at home. Other than that experience at the comedy show, I think you and your hubby still had a great month!

  68. Michelle Gwynn Jones

You two are really making a celebration of the year – good for you. Newport is so pretty, Can’t drunks be so entertaining.

  69. kancell724

It sounds like February was a good month for you guys. Hoping the rest of 2016 is as great.

  70. Christina Aliperti

That drunk lady was a mess, lol. I probably would have grabbed the phone myself and throw it into the aisle. Couldn’t blame you a bit for wanting to!

  71. hautebeautyguide

This totally made me laugh. I hate getting stuck next to a hot-mess when I am trying to have a nice night out. Yo handled so much nice than I would have.

  72. Carol Bryant

YAY for taking time for you. I would have been flipping out with that cell phone. How frustrating.

  73. Claire

Your pictures make me want to take a trip to New England ASAP! And what a funny story about that lady eeek!

  74. crystal

It sounds like you got your own private comedy show with that intoxicated woman there to entertain/annoy you. I hope your March adventures don’t involve audience participation.

  75. Angie Scheie (@AngelScheie)

I love this idea and if February is any indication your year of Robin and Chris is going to be amazing!

  76. victoria

Looks like you had an awesome day again with your hubby, I love doing new things with my hubby too

  77. Fatima

Great shots! I’ve never been to a chillI cook-off. I hear they’re fun. Looks like everyone had a great time, minus the lady with the phone. Poor woman, she was blasted.

  78. Lexie Lane

Looks you have a awesome and great month! God bless you always.

Attending in a comedy show was very cool and it has a lot of jokes, that’s really fun. I’m sure you had fun with them.

  86. tauyanm

looks fun! i wanna have a place where there is a near light house and good beach

  87. Jeanine (@sixtimemommy)

I’d have been kicked out already from that show because that lady would have been either told off, or pushed off her chair. Who does that out in public? Gross. Also, Cape Cod looks amazing. I’d love to visit one day!

  88. tp keane

Well done you guys for trying new things. I believe you when you said you’d rip the phone out of that woman’s hand and throw it across the room… I’d do the same.

  89. Christine - The Choosy Mommy

There’s nothing worse than drunk people, especially when they are distracting you from a show/event. It sounds like you had a good time either way!

  90. Crystal

It sounds like you all had a great time. I feel for you having to sit next to the drunk lady. It seems like it’s my luck that when we go to a ballgame or something the drunkest person there gets stuck beside me.

  91. Kelli @ 3 Boys and a Dog

Sounds like you guys have had a fun and entertaining year so far! And the lady next to you at the show, oh my goodness! I don’t know if I could hold it together either! You made it sound comical, however, the irritation would be high as well! Glad the year is turning out great for you and Chris!

  92. littlemisscant

Sounds like you guys had a great month! I had to laugh at the lady with the old cell.. Get a couple of drinks in me and I would probably pull a stunt like that too!

  94. Angela

I love how you and your husband are out there having fun and trying new things together. Comedy shows are always so much fun.

Eating chili and spending couple time sounds like a great idea right about now. It’s the simple things that we most enjoy now that we have been together for so long.

  118. positivelystacey

What a wonderful month you two had! You made me laugh about the phone lady – wonder what her gig really was. But I once ran to bathroom during concert – and it took me 15 minutes to find my seat again in the dark. Lessoned learned – no matter how bad you gotta run out – make a mental note of section and seat.

  119. Kelly Hutchinson

I love that you guys are focusing on yourselves this year! My husband and I have started having a date night each month, which is a big change for us.

  120. Camesha | Mama Motivator

What a fun idea! I love that you have t-shirts too! I seriously laughed out loud at the woman and her Nokia phone. I had one a million years ago!

  121. Shannon Peterson

I’ve been following along on your IG and it seems like you two have been having a lot of fun!
